A little more on Ninas

January 31, 2013 By Phixwd 3 Comments

I found myself in a Wellington cinema yesterday – in particular, in the toilets.  This being an upmarket cinema, it has decorated the toilets with film memorabilia, and directly in front of me was this:

mfl-cbs-2

Let’s not get involved with the chanteuse not being Audrey Hepburn, nor even Marni Nixon, so what’s it doing as film memorabilia (it’s actually the original Broadway cast, I believe).  I thought: “That’s an Al Hirschfeld, I wonder if there’s a Nina”.  (After all,my last post featured a puzzle with a Nina – or hidden theme – so the concept was fresh in my mind.)

And there was.  The obvious place to look was the tassels on Eliza’s scarf, and sure enough, NINA appears at the lower edge of the upper tassel, just above the basket.  It was clear enough on the wall, but it’s less easy to show on the screen, and none of the images I’ve found online quite do it.  However, I’ve fiddled around with cropping and contrast, and I can at least get the final A clear:

mfl-cbs-2enl

There it is, above the flower – you’ll just have to take my word for it that the adjacent lines spell NIN.  That is, unless you can find a copy of the LP sleeve, or can pop into the Lighthouse Cinema, Wigan Street, Wellington – first toilet on the right (don’t worry, they’re unisex).

The tassels at the other end of the scarf spell HIRSCHFELD, visible in this scan: http://img1.etsystatic.com/000/0/6084304/il_fullxfull.347259817.jpg. In this strangely crude version, http://www.performingartsarchive.com/Broadway/My-Fair-Lady_1957_with-tickets/My-Fair-Lady_1957_front-cover_with-tickets.jpg, the HIRSCHFELD is clear and the NINA seems to be mostly lower case.

This is the clearest image I can find of the NINA: http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/r/rex_harrison_julie_andrews-my_fair_lady(1).jpg

Qix has also pointed out that Hirschfeld had signed the picture in the other fringe. This wasn’t at all visible in the one in Wellington. I can’t comment yet on Roger’s improved options – I’m writing this outside, so screen clarity isn’t brilliant. In any case the second one took me to the site of San Diego International Airport!

[Later] Well, it did on my iPad – back on the big machine, I can only agree that it is a very odd adaptation of the original.
