It is an odd Easter without any eggs. We had meant to visit a chocolatier just a couple of days before lockdown, and forgot and missed our chance. So I am planning to make a feijoa and ginger cake later today as a sort of local version of parkin. (I always remember parkin as an Easter thing but I can’t find much justification for that. But it’s cake, so who needs justification?)
The puzzle this weekend is from late 2014 in the Enigmatic Variations series. Given that date, I can point you at a fifteensquared blog as well as my own setter’s blog on this site – but do try the puzzle first. Next week I plan to upload the 2019 APEX crossword, the competition for which has now completed.
That will coincide with a special Inquisitor for these troubled times. Look out for it.

Yes, we forgot the eggs too until it was too late but hope you have a delicious cake and a happy Easter anyway.

Hi Phi
What can I say?
I’ve been solving cryptics since the late 80’s – After I ‘mastered’ them I won the complete works of Charles Dickens in the Indie Christmas comp of 1989 – or was it ’88?
I was pleased as punch and invested in a copy of Chambers 88. I must have solved scores of your puzzles over the years over several publications – I refer to one as an example – Lenghtwise – I solved this at the time (early 90’s) but recently tried to resolve it (I got a second hand copy of Indie puzzles from Amazon) but failed this time – theatrophone and trumpetmajor stumped me second time around!
I just wish I could have a try at all the brilliant puzzles that are published by all setters – they must take so much thought to set but they have an ephemeral life – the Enigmatic Variations puzzle that you have given today highlights this.
Just a short note to give you some feedback, to let you know that your wizardry is not unappreciated.
Regards
Tim
