Blank crossword grid

Principles by Phi

Three consecutive letters must be removed from each of five clues before solving, always leaving real words. In clue order these give the three-word title of a book that contains three principles. One of these principles, a five-word phrase, is cryptically represented by the unclued 23 across (which is not a word). Another is given by the change made to a normally clued answer, producing a new (and thematic) phrase for entry in the grid.

The remaining principle, Phi hopes, is exemplified by the eight other unclued answers (shaded), which are not words, but would become eight items (one of two words) with something in common if the implication of the book’s title were applied. The eight letters required can be arranged to form the author’s name.

27 down, a familiar phrase, is not in Chambers, ODE or Collins, but is in Merriam-Webster.
